Book Dirt

Posted by: dkoupf on: August 12, 2011

What causes this familiar pattern of dirty splotches along the pages of old (used) books? I admit I got both books at the same used book sale, but I’ve seen this pattern elsewhere. It’s starting to give me the creeps. What gives?

Random Quotation

Posted by: dkoupf on: July 10, 2009

“To write:  to try meticulously to retain something, to cause something to survive; to wrest a few precise scraps from the void as it grows, to leave somewhere a furrow, a trace, a mark or a few signs.” From:  Perec, Georges. Species of Spaces and Other Pieces. Ed. and trans. John Sturrock. New York:  Penguin [...]

Random (Long) Quotation

Posted by: dkoupf on: July 9, 2009

“There are few events which don’t leave a written trace at least. At one time or another, almost everything passes through a sheet of paper, the page of a notebook, or of a diary, or some other chance support (a Métro ticket, the margin of a newspaper, a cigarette packet, the back of an envelope [...]

Random Quotation

Laurence Sterne on the circulation of a scrap (Yorick’s sermon): “Ill-fated sermon! Thou wast lost, after this recovery of thee, a second time, dropp’d thro’ an unsuspected fissure in thy master’s pocket, down into a treacherous and a tatter’d lining, — trod deep into the dirt by the left hind foot of his Rosinante, inhumanly [...]

And Another

Fmylife, the humor website popular among pretty much everyone with Internet access — from my college friends to my dad — has a book. I really don’t know what to say about this. I simply cannot imagine owning this book. I cannot imagine reading it more than once. I can, however, imagine, once again, giving [...]

Thinking

In what follows, I’d like to make some preliminary attempts at synthesizing some of the material on this blog. This is tough. While working on this project, I’ve come across tons of interesting stuff, but I often wonder what it all means. First, some comments on form:  blog + “archive” Working on a blog rather [...]

Scraps as Artifacts

Posted by: dkoupf on: April 9, 2009

I’ve been thinking about forging a scrap.  In deciding what I’d have to do to make the “scrap” seem authentic (alter my handwriting? include a couple spelling and grammar errors? crumple, rip, or stain the piece of paper? use a ball-point pen or a gel pen? or a pencil?), I’d be investigating the rhetorical features [...]

Progress Report #3 (Beta)

Posted by: dkoupf on: April 4, 2009

I’m mixing things up a bit today.  I’m thinking thinking thinking about this project and just want to get some ideas out there without getting too formal and specific.  So here’s some jumbled thoughts on my mind and in my notebook lately. Blogging an academic project is new and weird and messy and uncomfortable.  It’s [...]
